Wireless Internet Providers - Who Are The Most Popular?   by Kerry-Ann

in Computers / Mobile Computing    (submitted 2010-03-10)

When you see the sign Wi-Fi on an electronic gadget, it means that the instrument is capable of browsing or surfing the internet in places where there are wireless internet providers. The most common locations with wireless internet providers for mobile gadget users are coffee shops, libraries, restaurants and bars, shopping malls, the airport, and offices. Wi-Fi simply means wireless fidelity. Most of them will require you to input the WPA or WEP key or password and this safeguard is set by the venue owners to regulate the use of their wireless internet and to make sure that only their clients enjoy this particular amenity. And for your gadget to be able to receive Wi-Fi signals, it has to have an IEEE 802.11 device, which is now, on a standard basis, installed on laptop computers, cellular phones, video game consoles like Wii, PS and Xbox, and other internet surfing paraphernalia. IEEE stands for the organization that sets the standards in all electronic and electrical gadgets - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer.

Within the reach and range of a wireless network, also known technically as a hotspot, Wi-Fi enabled peripherals can log on to the internet. At home and in the offices, multiple users can access the internet through the technology of a router.

To date, there are thousands of wireless internet providers. These wireless internet providers battle it out in specific categories to attract more subscribers. And the most popular ones are not necessarily the best when it comes to providing the most excellent internet service. The usual bones of contention are:

• Speed - today, internet users are more discerning when it comes to broadband speed. Gone were the days when we have to bear the snail-like speed of dial up internet. We had to wait for hours or sometimes even days when downloading huge files.

• Consistency - There are popular internet service providers who can deliver the speed but cannot sustain the service. This problem is as irritating as slow internet speed. Now you are connected, now you aren't.

• Range - accessibility is an important factor in choosing a wireless internet provider. There are providers that offer high speed capabilities but have dead spots in certain areas. These complicates internet surfing especially when you are mobile.

• Price - nowadays, the flood of internet service providers has put internet subscription prices to a competitive level. In choosing, match the price with the range of services offered. A particular internet service provider may present lower subscription packages but another internet firm who is a few dollars higher may be offering more services and specific ones that you need. Or the price might be higher but the air time is longer and you will end up spending more with a cheap package but a higher rate when you exceed the allotted number of air time.

Currently, the most popular internet service providers in the market are:

• Telstra Big Pond • Vodafone Mobile Broadband • And 3 Mobile Broadband
