Erotic stories ignite the senses. Erotic stories can trigger an electrical signal in the brain which is difficult to ignore. These electronic flashes may be quite benign, often unnoticeable. If observable at all, they may simply be seen in a wry smile, a sideward glance or perhaps, a friendly grope or two.

One almost unknown writer of non-fiction erotic stories from the past had penned such an elaborate description of a sexual assault on a young female member of a Catholic cloister order of nuns, that numerous monks within the order, having read the description, in spite of strict orders not to, were said to drift uncontrollably into Impromptu Gregorian chants at all hours of the day and night. It was widely assumed that these monks had derived this strange habit from preceding the actual attacker into the young nun's habit. None of these accusations have been proven and it is still considered pure speculation that these particular monks left the order in order to create the rock group Déjà vu. Non fiction erotic stories too can be stranger than fiction!

Fiction erotic stories are often not very different at all, than the more mainstream erotica or even than mainstream literature for that matter, other than a slightly more insistent inclination to focus on sexuality. Erotic fiction is perhaps more easily observable in the form of a theatrical performance because you can simply look for the erections protruding from the actors tights. Fiction erotic stories usually focus the reader on sexual activity and often offer somewhat extended descriptions of this activity. As long as these erotic stories' extended descriptions of sexual activity are tasteful (no pun), and do not drift on into the more prurient forms of detailed sexual descriptions written simply for the purpose of titillating the reader and arousing him just for the purpose of arrousal, there can still be a literary purpose afoot.

Erotic stories do not have to be penned by Anais Nin in order to be meaningful, but of course it could help! There just aren't too many authors in any genre with the flair for saying a lot in a few words as Nin. "Age does not protect you from love. But love, to some extent, protects you from age." An observation worthy of great fiction, if I've ever read one. Hemingway may have spilled his pernod upon reading that line by Nin. Consider these few words:" And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." Erotic stories replete with all of the trappings of great literature, yes, it can be done. In fact Nin herself issues this challenge to writers: 'If you do not breathe through writing, if you do not cry out in writing, or sing in writing, then don't write, because our culture has no use for it."
