- Chest pain or discomfort
- Chills or hot flashes
- Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself)
- Fear of dying
- Fear of losing control or going crazy
- Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint
- Feeling of choking
- Nausea or abdominal distress
- Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
- Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations)
- Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
- Sweating
- Trembling or shaking

According to the American Psychological Association, "the symptoms of a panic attack commonly last approximately thirty minutes. However, panic attacks can be as short as 15 seconds, while sometimes panic attacks may form a cyclic series of episodes, lasting for an extended period, sometimes hours…panic attacks are commonly linked to agoraphobia and the fear of not being able to escape a bad situation. Many who experience panic attacks feel trapped and unable to free themselves."

How common are panic attacks?

According to Britain's widely respected government health body, the NHS (National Health Service), "At least one person in 10 experiences occasional panic attacks, which are usually triggered by a stressful event or situation. However, people with panic disorder have recurring and regular attacks, often for no apparent reason.

The number of panic attacks that you have will depend on the severity of your condition. Some people may have one or two attacks each month, while others may have several attacks a week."

Can People with Panic Disorder lead normal lives?

According to the American Psychological Association, "The answer to this is a resounding YES -- if they receive treatment. Panic disorder is highly treatable, with a variety of available therapies.

These treatments are extremely effective, and most people who have successfully completed treatment can continue to experience situational avoidance or anxiety, and further treatment might be necessary in those cases. Once treated, panic disorder doesn't lead to any permanent complications."
